Chapter Seven
I didnât hear from Linda at all after she was fired. She simply disappeared from the store without even saying goodbye. Over the weekend, it was radio silence.
I texted her a couple of times but I didnât want to be too clingy, so I mostly left her alone. It was clear that getting fired had impacted her and I thought that maybe she just wanted to be left alone.
It was hard not talking to her. Not only because I missed her presence and the sound of her voice, but also because I wanted to know what theyâd said to her when she was fired.
If the managers had been as nasty as they usually were, I wanted to make sure she felt safe and comforted. Linda didnât deserve to be treated so badly. No one did. The fact that they had gotten away with it for so long just showed how far this store had fallen.
When I first started working here, it was pleasant. The store was newly built and the brand was still growing. The company was making waves in the beauty industry and everyone was excited. There was always this buzzing energy in the store, like we were witnessing the start of something incredible.
Of course, that all fizzled out when new management was brought in. They were incompetent, mean, and refused to hear constructive criticism. Within months the store had turned into a husk of its former self.
I wished Linda could have seen the store back in its glory days. It would have been so different for her. She would have been able to be herself and actually had an enjoyable environment to work in.
But that was the past.
And this was now.
I kept my head down as I made my way into the staff room. Once my belongings were stuffed into my locker, I moved to the mirror hanging on the wall and checked my appearance.
My make-up was rushed and sloppy. The mascara was goopy on my lashes, my eyeliner was wonky and uneven, and even my foundation looked patchy.
I knew it wasnât a good look for a make-up brand to have employees with bad make-up, but I just didnât have the energy to try and fix it. No matter how hard I tried to counteract my worry, my hands refused to stop shaking and sweating.
No matter how long I stared at my mistakes, they werenât going to magically fix themselves. I turned away from the mirror, feeling the weight of the world press against my shoulders, and tried to find my retail smile.
When the door sharply opened in front of me, I jumped back a little. The handle smashed into the wall loudly, sending shudders through the entire room.
Standing in the doorway was Janet, her hair looking crunchier than ever. She looked down her nose at me and narrowed her eyes as she folded her arms across her chest.
âThere you are,â she said coldly. âFollow me.â
As soon as I heard those words, I knew what was going to happen.
